ResCode — short for Residential Code — is the set of design standards that applies to almost all residential development in Victoria. Codified in Clause 55 of the Victorian Planning Provisions, it includes 34 objectives and associated standards covering site layout, building height, open space, car parking, and neighbourhood character.
Site Coverage and Permeability
Site coverage is the proportion of the site covered by buildings, including garages and covered structures. The standard is 60% in most zones. Permeability requires at least 20% of the site to be able to absorb rainwater.
Setback Requirements
Setback requirements under ResCode vary by wall height, lot width, and street type, using a formula to calculate minimum side and rear setbacks.

Overlooking and Overshadowing
The overlooking standard requires that habitable room windows and balconies avoid direct views into neighbours' secluded private open space within 9 metres. The overshadowing standard requires that no more than 40% of a neighbour's secluded private open space falls in shadow at midday on the September equinox.
Private Open Space
Each dwelling must have at least 40m² of private open space, including a secluded area of at least 25m² with a minimum 3m × 3m dimension accessible directly from a living area.
